SMOKE

In his show at SPILT gallery, their inaugural exhibition, Russell displayed works from his Smoke series. The paintings draw from photographs of the Second World War, transforming the images into symbolic imagery of existence, destruction, and after the smoke dissipates, rebirth. Through stark monochromatic paintings depicting explosions, tangled trees in dormancy, and layered compositions, he reflects on the way human activities shape and unsettle the world in which we live.
